One of the most impressive films of the year is Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, with digital production (the word post does not apply here), computer imagery and visual effects primarily provided by Framestore and lead by visual effects supervisor Tim Webber. Back when you dreamed about being an astronaut, you imagined floating in space, looking back at Earth, and it sounded amazing. Not so much if you’re not attached to a station or a ship and have no way to get back home. That’s the situation writer-director Alfonso Cuarón created for Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in October’s Gravity. The actors play a pair of astronauts whose shuttle explodes, leaving them tethered to each other — and nothing else. Imagine the worst claustrophobia you’ve ever had combined with the worst acrophobia and you’ll start to get some sense of what’s in store for them. While Cuarón made his mark with intimate movies like Children of Men and Y Tu Mamè Tambièn, he wrote Gravity with his son, Jonès, who en- couraged his dad to up the stakes. The result was a four-and-a-half-year odyssey of research, animation, and CG innovation like nothing Cuarón had done before. The writer-director spoke to us about microgravity, Méliès, and the magic of silence. After all, in space, no one can hear you scream, “Action!”

Microsoft Positions Surface Pro 2 for 4K Workflow

Microsoft made a play for the content creation market yesterday, when it positioned its forthcoming Microsoft Surface Pro 2 tablet as a full-fledged mobile workstation with horsepower to spare. Specifically, Microsoft Surface General Manager Panos Panay [pictured, top] showed off a Red Dragon Carbon Fiber camera, then proceeded to scrub through some 6K raw R3D footage in Assimilate Scratch Play. "I'm using raw 6K footage … and I can do what I want with it here at my workstation as a full-powered PC," Panay said, using the Surface Pro 2 in notebook mode with attached keyboard. Then, he undocked the computer and detached the screen from the keyboard to carry the system across the stage in tablet mode, describing it as having "the full power of a PC in a tablet form factor."

“Box,” a new short film/performance from design and engineering studio Bot & Dolly produced in association with The Creators Project, takes projection mapping, well — out of the box. Just to make sure you understand what you’re seeing: The above video is documentation of a live performance. I’ve been assured there is no composting in post-production. It’s all live. Bot & Dolly calls their combination of robotic arms and projection mapping a “kinematic projection platform.” Tarik Abdel-Gawad, Creative Director at Bot & Dolly explains the setup: “Through large-scale robotics, projection mapping and software engineering, audiences will witness the trompe l’oeil effect pushed to new boundaries.”

Sid Lee Paris and Unit9 worked on an artistic project for Ubisoft's game, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The project asked fans to log on to a site and place their faces on characters inside an 18th century classical art painting crafted by artists from L'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. The painting features a battle scene from the "Age of Piracy," where the game is set. Once fans put their faces in, the best ones were immortalized.

Before VFX

What’s this site about?
The response to this site has been overwhelming and incredibly fast. I started this only two days ago and the site already has 2500+ followers and many more views.
I’ve received a lot of emails of support but I’ve also had a lot of fellow VFX artists ask me to at least acknowledge the current issues facing our industry on this site. There’s plenty of excellent coverage out there already (NPR, io9, The Verge, HitFix, and many more) and I encourage you to read it. So, is this blog a response to the Oscars, and the protest preceding it, and the VFX industry’s turmoil? Well sure, it did prompt its creation, I won’t deny that. The truth is this is blog has been in my head for a while but with all that’s happened in the last two days in the VFX world, I knew now was the time.
But I don’t want this site to be about the plight of the VFX industry.
My intention is to highlight the artistry of VFX by showing you the canvas. At a time when even Hollywood can’t seem tell the difference between Oscar-winning Visual Effects and Oscar-winning Cinematography, I think it needs to be made clear which is which. Without the fantastic VFX work by talented artists, Hollywood films would not be what they are today.

To emphasize the emotion of each Ident, we have decided to use different textures of steel, wood and glass. Motion sculpture of steel reflects old Chinese adage that true power is mastering yourself. Youthful energy of dancers evolve into beautiful organic sculpture. Colorful happiness is the engine of father's and his daughter's joy. Two lovers visualize fragility and vitality of love in the last Ident.
